In this workshop, participants will explore how folk music traditions can serve as a foundation for original songwriting. Through guided exercises in storytelling, melody, and rhythm, students will learn how to draw inspiration from traditional songs while developing their own unique musical voices. By analyzing folk structures and themes, participants will gain tools to craft authentic and compelling original works.

Prior to a performance at a given venue, a coordinated hashtag campaign, #AmericanPatchworkProject, will be used to share immigration stories from members of the venue´s community. Starting two months before the concert, venues will encourage community members to post self-portraits and share their family origins or migrant stories on social media using the hashtag. On the day of performance, APQ will provide an interactive installation of a world map and pins and invite audience members to post a representation of their family origins. APQ and venues will document their pinned map with a photograph and share them all using the #AmericanPatchworkProject hashtag.

In this interactive workshop, participants will explore the “melting pot” of immigrant cultures that lead to the creation of distinctly American musical styles. Through lessons utilizing polyrhythms, call and response, and critical listening students will learn to differentiate and understand quintessential American music styles and how those styles continue to evolve through the music of APQ.
